Energy Conservation
Energy issues are key to the building glass industry as our products can make an important contribution to combating climate change and attaining the ambitious goal set by the EU’s heads of state and government to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20% by 2020.
Different types of glass we have developed over the years, especially low-e double glazing and solar protective glazing, can significantly reduce the need for heating and cooling in buildings, thereby reducing energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions.
Many older buildings are less energy efficient than they might otherwise be because they make use of obsolete energy-inefficient glass. Measures supporting the uptake of existing environmentally friendly technologies such as the Commission’s Environmental Technologies Action Plan (ETAP) and Energy Performance Directive have a direct impact on us.
As our products are an important element of the construction process, producers of glass are also keenly aware of the need for appropriate waste management measures and recycling efforts when glass products reach the end of their useful lives.
